The number of care home outbreaks in every Lancashire area
Written by Skywave Radio News on May 29, 2020
There have been nearly 200 coronavirus outbreaks in Lancashire care homes.
So far, one in three care homes in the area have reported outbreaks of coronavirus.
There have been a total of 185 suspected or confirmed Covid-19 outbreaks reported in care homes in Lancashire (including Blackburn and Blackpool) between March 9 and May 24.
That means 35% of the 529 care homes in the area have had cases.
Last week (ending May 24), there were four new suspected or confirmed outbreaks in care homes in the area.
That was down from five newly reported the week before, and down from a peak of 40 reports in the week ending April 12.
Separate figures from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), show 38 deaths involving coronavirus in care homes in Lancashire in the week ending May 22.
That was up from 37 the week before, and down from 43 the week before that.
Notifications about deaths in care homes are typically provided to the CQC within two to three days of death, so the numbers are more up to date than ONS figures, as death registrations take an average of 11 days.
Deaths are included based on the statement from the care home provider, so the person who died may not have had a medical diagnosis or a test result and Covid-19 may not have been mentioned on the death certificate.
The figures show a total of 232 Covid-19 related deaths were notified to the CQC by care homes between April 10 and May 22.
Deaths involving Covid-19 made up a third (32%) of all deaths in care homes over the period.

Across England, a total of 6,102 suspected or confirmed Covid-19 outbreaks have been reported in care homes.
This data comes from reports to Public Health England (PHE) of infectious disease outbreaks in residential and nursing homes.
Any individual care home will only be included in the dataset once. If a care home has reported more than one outbreak, only the first is included in this dataset.
However, it’s not possible to know from the data if the reported outbreaks are still ongoing.
In the week ending May 24, 215 new outbreaks were reported – that was a drop from 297 a week before.
There were 870 Covid-19-related deaths in care homes reported in the week ending May 22, down from 1,390 the week before.
