Preston neighbourhoods hit hardest with Covid deaths in 2020

Written by on January 20, 2021

A new official map has been created showing how deadly the coronavirus outbreak has been in each Preston neighbourhood during 2020.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published new data this week for people who have Covid-19 listed as the ‘main cause of death’ between March 1 and December 31.

The deaths are listed by middle-layer super output area (MSOA). These are neighbourhoods with an average population of 7,200 residents.

A total of 229 deaths were recorded across 17 Preston areas over the 10-month period.

The Longsands ward of Preston was the worst area for the coronavirus-related tragedy with 24 deaths.

Brookfield & Holme Slack and Cadley & College recorded the next highest death toll with 19 each.

Four areas of Preston recorded fewer than 10 deaths over the period, with the lowest in Preston Town Centre with six fatalities.

The ONS has published the new interactive map below.

You can input your postcode and the tool will tell you how many deaths there have been in your area.

The point on the map doesn’t show the exact location of a death, it signals the centre of the local area where it occurred. The size of the point increases according to the number of deaths.

The ONS said to protect confidentiality, a small number of deaths have been reallocated between neighbouring areas.

To find the number of deaths in your neighbourhood, enter your postcode on the map here:
