Piers Morgan shares heartbreaking update on Kate Garraway’s husband Derek

Written by on January 26, 2021

Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan has given a devastating update on Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper.

Derek, from Chorley, has been seriously ill in hospital since March 2020 after he contracted coronavirus.

The 53-year-old has been left with medical complications including diabetes and holes in his lungs and heart and remains in hospital.

He has not been able to communicate at all except to mouth the word “pain” after regaining minimal consciousness from his medically induced coma.

Piers pleaded with GMB viewers today to take Covid-19 seriously, saying: “Ask enough people and you’ll find somebody [who has been affected by the virus].

“We know from our colleague Kate Garraway, whose husband is still in a coma from Covid.

“He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this, and it’s heartbreaking.”

He added: “We know. It’s hit right here on our show. But then it’s hit Nadhim Zahawi, and it’s hit a lot of people. 100,000 people or more have now lost their lives.

“Think of how many family members they all have. Multiply that, and you’re getting into millions of people directly affected by Covid-19.

“We’ve got to take this seriously and we’ve got to get vaccinated as fast as possible. That’s the only way through this.”

Speaking last week to Piers and Susanna, Kate revealed that Derek was still ‘ravaged by the effects of Covid’.

She said: “His recovery incredibly uncertain, I’m trying to look for new ways and talking to doctors about what we can do for him.

“Meanwhile, people are still dying in extraordinary numbers, people that aren’t older and haven’t got underlying issues and it is just unbearable.”

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV at 6am.
