The history of a viral Preston sensation and how it led to First Dates

Written by on January 16, 2022

You’ve all seen the video and you’ve all heard of the legend.

It was May 2007 when a clip from BBC Three’s short-lived documentary Baby Faced Bodybuilders went viral.

The clip, which has outlasted the programme about young Brits looking to bulk-up for competitions, has since had something of a resurgence, going through the rounds on YouTube and even Tik Tok.

It is of course the one minute cameo of the young Preston bodybuilder explaining his extreme cutting diet.

“Eight o’clock in the morning I will have fish and a rice cake, at 10 o’clock I will have fish.

“At 12 o’clock I’ll have fish and a rice cake, at two o’clock I’ll have fish, at four o’clock, just before I train, I’ll have fish and a rice cake.

“I’ll train, I’ll have me fish, I’ll come home, have some more fish, with a rice cake, then have some fish before I go to bed.

“Then that’s it for the day.”

The man was Danny Andrews who was training for the Mr Cumbria competition when he appeared on the show 15 years ago.

A fresh-faced teenager at the time of filming, Danny could never have believed that his monologue would have turned him into a viral sensation.

But since the clip has resurfaced on YouTube it has received in excess of two million hits with numerous copies floating about on Tik Tok and other sites.

Compilations on viral British memes and clips would not be complete without a snippet of Danny’s face as he contemplates whether it’s fish or fish and rice cakes, and even compilations made in 2021 still feature him.

Now aged 31, Danny owns Danny’s Barber Shop in Woodplumpton Road, Fulwood.

Though he may still have strangers and friends tagging him in the infamous video, Danny’s diet worked as his Instagram will prove.

The guy is pretty ripped.

In 2019, Danny spoke to LadBible about his issues with viral fame. He told the online news site: “My diet was only that for the last two weeks before my show; I don’t actually like fish.

“Instead of saying I have eight meals of fish a day, and every other meal I have a rice cake, I was trying to work out times.

“So it makes me appear absolutely stupid, fitting the stereotype of the typical bodybuilder.

“At the time I was so embarrassed, but I have embraced it.”

Early last year, Danny reappeared on our TV screens when he starred in an episode of Channel Four’s First Dates.

Half-way through dinner with, holiday resort singer, Abbie, Danny admitted that he was the star of the viral video.

“You’re fish and rice cake man?” asked his startled date.

“Unfortunately yeah.”
