Lorraine Kelly on ‘hard, hard road’ for Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper

Written by on May 18, 2022

Lorraine Kelly has warned it’s going to be a ‘hard, hard road’ for Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper in an update on his coronavirus recovery.

The TV presenter spoke on the Spinning Plates podcast with singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor and discussed how the news of Derek’s hospitalisation at the start of the pandemic really “impacted” her. She also hailed her ITV co-star as “remarkable” for the love and care given to the former political lobbyist from Chorley.

Derek, 54, has been bedridden since contracting Covid-19 in March 2020. He returned home from hospital in April 2021 after a year-long battle with the virus, and still requires round-the-clock care in the midst of his lengthy recovery.

Despite her many work projects, including Good Morning Britain, Smooth Radio, Life Stories and two emotionally-charged documentaries, as well as caring for the couple’s two children, Kate also has to fund the care for her husband. She created a well-being garden to made her own herbal teas and recently revealed Draper had flown out to Mexico in November 2021 to take part in a new treatment programme.

Lorraine, 62, described the news surrounding Covid as “dire” but said that she tried to include light-hearted features on her show with a focus on kindness during the pandemic, reports the Express. “There weren’t many bits of light in this whole terrible time.”

The daytime TV show presenter explained: “Kate Garraway’s husband was one of the first to get really sick. He’s at home now.

“Thank goodness he’s at home now, surrounded by his family, but it’s going to be a hard road…it’s going to be a hard, hard road. She’s remarkable.”

Podcast host and The Music Gets The Best of Me singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor agreed. In April, Kate was absent from Good Morning Britain for a number of days and issued an apology to ITV viewers.

She explained that she had to cancel her GMB hosting duties due to an urgent situation at home. Kate took to social media and wrote: “So apologies for my absence from @gmb this last week – had to deal with some “urgents” at home.

“But before that managed to get a whole hour dollop of #garrawaysgoodstuff in the bag for you.” She added: “Great #feelgood shares from @peterandre & @jamesbaymusic – plus this?!
